Anderton Boat Lift’s Firework Spectacular is back with a bang this Saturday 29th October. The perfect way to celebrate Diwali’s Festival of Lights* (and avoid trick or treating).
This Saturday Cheshire’s ‘Cathedral of the Canals’, the Anderton Boat Lift, near Northwich will stage its annual firework spectacular. Known for the quality of its fireworks and its impressive location, visitors can watch the outstanding fireworks display from the lawned terraces overlooking the River Weaver and the huge boat lift. This is an ideal event for those who prefer not to ‘trick or treat’ or who want to celebrate Diwali (Festival of Lights) with a spectacular light display.
Children’s rides will be available on the night with Platform 7 giving an open air performance at 6:45 pm. Gates open at 6.30pm and the display begins at 8pm. Advance tickets can be purchased at reduced price either online at DiscoverCheshire.com or by calling 01606 786 777.
Pre-purchased tickets cost – Adults £6, Concessions £5, Children £4, Family £16 (two adults plus two children or one adult and three children). On the night, the gate price will be Adults £8, Concessions £7, Children £6, Family £23.
Freshly prepared, affordable food will be available on the night at the Lift’s tree-top Coffee Shop as well as the food stands in the grounds and bar will also be available in the Lift View Marquee.
Graham Wood, Duty Manager, Anderton Boat Lift, said: “The Anderton Boat Lift firework spectacular is not like other firework displays – it is always a relaxed and magical family night out. In part this is because of the way the fireworks reflect in the water as they light up the skies above. But I think the backdrop of the awe-inspiring lift gives it an extra frisson you don’t get elsewhere.
“Although this is not a Diwali-themed firework display, it is a fantastic way to also celebrate the Festival of Lights that happens to fall over this weekend. Our firework spectacular – complete with band, activities for children and delicious food and drink, is always one of the most popular events in the Lift’s calendar of events. We hope everyone will come along and bring their friends.”
The Anderton Boat Lift is one of the seven wonders of Britain’s waterways and is an engineering masterpiece, being the world’s first ever successful boat lift. The Lift sits in a spectacular location between the River Weaver and the Trent & Mersey Canal and is an interesting combination of working historic structure and fun, educational experience.
During the Autumn there are regular boat trips from the Lift. Visitors can either learn about the unique industrial heritage of Northwich as they travel along the River Weaver to Northwich or opt for a trip through the spectacular boat lift. Combined tickets mean visitors can also do both boat trips at reduced price.
The Anderton Boat Lift is owned by the Canal and River Trust and was restored in 2002 after a £7 million restoration made possible due to a substantial grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Anderton Boat Lift is a major visitor attraction, drawing more than 120,000 visitors to it each year.

*This is not a Diwali-themed firework display but Diwali falls this year between 28 October and 1 November so will be widely celebrated over this weekend. Diwali or Deepavali is one of the most prominent and famous Hindu festivals of India. In Sanskrit, word ‘Deepavali’ means “rows of lights” so this festival is also known as “Festival of Lights”.
