Wetland Habitat Improvement
Wet grassland is one of the most rapidly diminishing wetland types in Britain. However, unlike most other wet grasslands that are lost through drainage for agriculture, Hartford wetlands actually suffered the opposite problem. Poor drainage led to the site becoming too wet, this eventually lead to the cessation of cattle grazing at this site.
Saltscape volunteers worked hard alongside our partner, the Canals and River trust, to transform the Harford Wetlands back to their former glory. Over 1000 hours of volunteering went into the site! removing willow herb, creating scrapes to improve site diversity and excavating ditches for drainage. In some areas grazing has even come back into practise as a result of the excellent work undertaken.
