Just a week to go now until local volunteers  get chance to have a go at a spot of Industrial Archaeology with experts from Salford University as part of the Saltscape Landscape Partnership’s Community Archaeology project.

Mike Nevell, Head of Archaeolgy at Salford University said,   “This is such a great opportunity for people from the local community to get their hands dirty and develop new skills that will help in unearthing more information about the salt industry and the way it has shaped the landscape.  Volunteers will use their new-found techniques and research skills to investigate salt production in Marston, Wincham and Middlewich and learn more about the built heritage of the area.”

As part of the project local people are being encouraged to document social history and create a bank of personal stories associated with the industry which enables the less-well studied sites connected with the salt industry in the Weaver Valley to be explored.

Practical work begins on the site of the old Adelaide Salt Works in Marston next week   This site is not usually accessible, but we are able to carry out the project with the kind permission of the Club 20 Angling Syndicate who own the land.  Check the website again soon for more news of what we find during excavations!
